This week, we learned from CNN that the median age of Filipinos is 22.9 years old. 22.9. We’ve just passed puberty.
Now, a median number is a midpoint — meaning, half of our population is older than 22.9, and the other half is younger. This is a really surprising statistic….
Interesting. A clean slate population. I remember my Lit prof saying how our generation will never experience what the past generations have experienced - war, dictatorship and such; and how we’ll never get to tell those kinds of stories to our grandchildren. Well, we’ll never know what will happen to us anyways.

Baybayin
Baybayin is a pre-Spanish Philippine writing system, it is a member of the Brahmic family and is recorded as being in use in the 16th century.
The term Baybay literally means “to spell” in Tagalog. Baybayin was extensively documented by the Spanish. Some have attributed it the name Alibata, but this name is incorrect.
Baybayin is one of a number individual writing systems used in Southeast Asia, nearly all of which are abugidas where any consonant is pronounced with the inherent vowel a following it — diacritical marks being used to express other vowels (this vowel occurs with greatest frequency in Sanskrit, and also probably in all Philippine languages).

I’m just loving the spirit of the entire #MoreFunInThePhilippines of the Department of Tourism. And I love that the positive messages and images completely outnumber the negastars and their snark.
Well played, DOT.

I’m actually liking these pictures. And the slogans. :-bd
“Philippine President Benigno Aquino ordered an investigation on Tuesday into flash floods and landslides that sent mud and logs crashing down on residents, killing about 1,000 people on a southern island.
The national disaster agency said 957 were killed and 49 missing on Mindanao after Typhoon Sendong (aka Typhoon Washi) triggered the slides. Most of the casualties were in the cities of Cagayan de Oro and Iligan and tens of thousands remain homeless, many sheltering in evacuation centres.
Aquino met officials in the two cities worst hit by the cascades that swept down mountainsides as residents of riverside and coastal villages slept in the early hours of Saturday.”

DPWH Photoshop Fail
by Pierre Albert San DiegoI’m a civil engineer by profession and I love my job and if there’s one thing I hate it’s people that fabricate their inspection reports. Why? Inspection reports are very important in our field, if the inspection report is erroneous, this might lead to a wrong and/or costly design. Aside from that, it might lead to a very difficult project implementation, and worse, not prepare others from potential safety risks of the site.
Which is why I was uber-pissed when I was checking my updates in FB at around lunch time yesterday and I saw this.
Now, if you didn’t have knowledge in Adobe photoshop, you would’ve just glanced at it and moved on with your life, but I’ve used the software since I was in high school (I’m 30 now) so I kinda noticed something weird.

Infographics: How Big is the Agusan Monster Crocodile?
Agusan del Sur’s monster crocodile became an instant celebrity (and internet sensation) over the past days mainly because it is said to be the largest saltwater crocodile ever caught in the wild.
I have been always wondering how big the crocodile is. I need to have an infographic of a reference point to compare the crocodile with other common things.
Now thanks to ABS-CBNnews.com’s infographic, I am enlightened.
And as for the usual and other stuff for the Republic:
- Agusan Del Sur’s monster crocodile is 21 foot long and is said to be the largest and longest in the world. I wonder where the shortest crocodile is. Wait, what is the height of our former President?
- TV-5 and Direk Carlo J. Caparas should hire this croc as a substitute for their CGI-croc Bangis.
- The local government of Bunawan, Agusan del Norte is planning to make megacroc a tourist attraction. I wonder if the Quezon City government is planning to do the same with the huge building at Batasan Hills.
- I wonder how these crocodiles would react if they can speak out how they were being compared to Pinoy Politicians (I was seriously considering writing a piece entiltled A Crocodile Monologue.).
Protect our species. Protect our environment. Have a blessed Thursday everyone!

The Stereotypical Katipunero
Since Historians are still arguing when and where the first sounds of the Revolution are heard (Aug 24 vs Aug 26, Pugadlawin vs Balintawak), to commemorate the event, the government designated the National Heroes Day in the last Sunday of August.
Do you know why this is the stereotypical Katipunero suit? Nick Joaquin offers us a good insight.
Checkpoints are being established in and out of the Manila Area when Katipunan was discovered during the 19th of August. Bonifacio directed his followers to gather in Caloocan in the 24th of August, since there are checkpoints, the Katipuneros told the guards that they are going to the feast of San Bartolome de Malabon celebrated during August 24.
San Bartolome de Malabon is an image of Saint Bartholomew the Apostle, wearing red and white and brandishing a bolo, and pilgrims to the feast wear the same colors along with a bolo.
